Who Did It Better? [1] – Cover VS Original

So I thought it would be really cool to start a series where I compare two artists doing the same song. One artist is the original artist and song and the other will be a cover of the song and another artist.

The first “battle” is Calum Scott VS Robyn both singing the song “Dancing on My Own”

As you see, this song is pretty upbeat as is most of Robyn’s music. I remember hearing this song years ago, but I’m honestly not a huge fan of Robyn.

This song is the complete opposite from the original. It’s a lot slower and, in my opinion, way better. I’ve been listening to this song a lot recently and didn’t even realize that it was the same song as the Robyn one for the longest time. He killed it with this cover.

  1. I’m completely unfamiliar with this song, so I was going in with fresh ears on both. My initial reaction is that I don’t care much for either, but I do enjoy the androgynous juxtaposition of both side by side. If I had to pick, I probably prefer the original, and it’s a testament to her writing that someone else is able to cover it so differently and so deftly.

I was just thinking of this very topic last night: the question I was turning around in my head was whether “The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo)” is better as Dylan’s original or Manfred Mann’s considerably more pop-oriented radio hit.
